Disinfection-other halogens Flashcards
Iodine
disinfecting halogen that persist in water as hypoiodous acid and molecular iodine. Does not react with organic nitrogen compounds to form halogenated hydrocarbon.
Bromine, chlorine dioxide, bromine chloride.
Disinfecting agents.
Extreme pH
less than 5 and greater than 11 have bactericidal effect
Heat treatment
boiling for more than 15 minutes will result in disinfection
Name and discuss metallic ions disinfection
Metallic ions such as silver, copper, and mercury could be used as disinfectant.
Advantage:
low effective dose, ease of application, residual protection
Disadvantage
probability of adsorption on colloidal materials
probability of inhibtion or precipitation by other materials
reduction in efficiency with temp
possibility of overdose
relatively high cost
