It relies on the sex cells from two individuals meeting.
Why is variation important?
It makes it more likely that at least a few of the offspring will have the ability to survive difficult conditions.

Hair and eye colour.

Whether your ear lobes are attached or not, whether your thumb is straight or curved, whether you have dimples when you smile.
