Decay Processes Flashcards
What breaks down the waste and the dead animals and plants?
Decomposers.
What microorganisms are decomposers?
Bacteria and fungi.
What starts the process of decay?
Detritus feeders.
Examples of detritus feeders?
Maggots and some types of worm.
What are the waste products of decomposers?
Carbon dioxide, water and nutrients.
The recycling of materials through the process of decay does what?
Makes sure the soil contains the mineral ions that plants need to grow.
What conditions are needed for decay?
Warm, moist, plenty of oxygen.
Why do you need warm conditions for decay?
Chemical reactions in microorganisms work faster in warm conditions.
Why are moist conditions needed for respiration?
The moisture makes it easier for them to dissolve their food and also prevents them from drying out.
Why is plenty of oxygen needed for respiration?
To respire. They need to release energy to grow and reproduce.
In sewage treatment plants how are microorganisms used?
They break down bodily waste. This makes it safe to release into rivers or the sea.
How are decomposers useful in the garden?
In the compost heap, where grass cuttings, vegetable peelings and weeds are put, decomposing organisms break down the plant material. It forms a brown, crumbly substance known as compost.
