types of proteins Flashcards
globular proteins properties?
Compact, water soluble, spherical
When do globular protein they form?
When proteins fold into their tertiary structures so that the hydrophobic R-groups on the amino acids are kept away AQ environment.
example of a globular protein?
insulin
what is insulin?
it is a hormone that regulates blood glucose concentrations
what is the difference between conjugated proteins and globular proteins proteins ?
conjugated proteins contain contain a prosthetic group
example of conjugated proteins
Haemoglobin
What prosthetic group does haemoglobin contain?
Contains haem group, these contain iron
What is a fibrous protein?
Fibrous proteins is a protein with an elongated shape. Fibrous proteins provide structural support for cells and tissues. Keratin, elastin and collagen are all examples of fibrous proteins
What is karatin?
Fibrous proteins containing sulfur-containing amino acid, cyateine. This results in many strong disulphide bonds forming strong, inflexible and soluble materials.
Where in the body is keratin found?
Hair, skin and nails.
What is elastin?
Elastin is a quaternary protein made from many stretchy molecules. It is is found in elastic fibres. This allows structures to flexibility to expand when needed, but also recoil into the its original size.
What is collagen?
Collagen is an connective tissue. There are a number of different forms but all are made up of three polypeptides wound together in a long and strong rope-like structure. Collagen does have some level of flexibility
Where is collagen present in the body?
Skin, tendons, ligaments and the nervous system.
