why is staining used?
A
staining is used because some cells let a lot of light through, so there is not enough contrast to see the cells. stains increase the contrast and allow the components to become visible

name two types of staining
A
Gram stain technique - gram positive bacteria will turn blue after placed in iodine. Gram negative will appear red/pink under a light microscope
Acid-fast technique - cells are dyed and washed with acid. Mycobacterium are not affected and appear red. other bacteria will appear blue

what is the calculation for magnification?
A
MAGNIFICATION= IMAGE SIZE / ACTUAL SIZE
