mitosis Flashcards
definition of a chromatid
each of the two thread-like strands into which a chromosome divides longitudinally during cell division. Each contains a double helix of DNA.
name the phases of mitosis
prophase
metaphase
anaphase
telophase
state what happens during prophase
chromatin fibres coil and condense becoming visable under a light microscope.
protein molecules form spindle-shaped structures linking the poles of the cell
state what happens during metaphase
chromosomes are moved to the centre of the cell and then held in position by the spindle fibres at the centromere of the chromatid.
state what happens in anaphase
the centromeres are split by spindles pulling them apart. this forces the chromatids to sperrate
