Permafrost definition
Ground that has been frozen for two or more consecutive years
Continuous permafrost
Solid block of frozen ground
Active layer may be 0.5m thick
Frozen ground extends to 400average temperatures of -12°c
Discontinuous permafrost
Permafrost is broken up and has gaps between it with layers of talik (unfrozen soil)
Extends to 50m
Temperatures of -5.5°c
Sporadic permafrost
Patchy permafrost
Active layer of 1.5-3m
Depths of 10m

Can range from 0.5m to 4m depending on the type of permafrost
(Isolated permafrost)
Very patchy permafrost
Active layer 4m
Temperatures of -1°c - 0°c
