Landforms Of Glacial Deposition Flashcards
Drumlin
Forms when a glacier becomes overloaded with debris
Causing it to drop some on its course
Made up of lodgement till which is unsorted and unstratified.
Dimensions: 50-60m high, up to 1.5km long
Has a gentle lee slope and steep stoss slope.
Ice flows from the steep slope to the gentle slope.
E.g. Ribble valley, Lancs
Glacial deposition
Most deposition happens at the snout at the zone of ablation.
Ice becomes overloaded with debris and drops it at the snout OR where the glacier changes between extending and compressing flow (happens when the ice is moving by compressing flow)
Types of moraines
Lateral - found at the side of a glacier
Medial - found in the middle of a glacier
(You can tell where they are by looking for dark strips in a glacier)
Moraines
Ridges of material running across glacial valleys
When the glacier retreats, recessional moraines are formed
Terminal moraines are found at the snout
Push moraines is when all the moraines formed previously are pushed into one large one.
Moraines dimensions and shape
They are crescent shape as the flow is fastest in the middle of the glacier
40-50m high
Formed from ablation till, unsourced and unstratified
Till plains
Found in lowland areas and are left behind when an ice sheet retreats
