Landforms Of Fluvio-glacial Deposition Flashcards
Eskers
Sinuous (bendy) mounds of sorted and stratified Flávio-glacial debris.
Up to 20m high
They form from meltwater streams within the ice that carry debris.
These streams can flow upstream because of hydrostatic pressure.
Post glaciation, the glacier melts and drops the debris to the valley base.
Kames
Mounds of sorted sediment deposited along the snout of a slowly moving or stationary glacier.
Consists of sands and gravels and builds up as more debris is added.
It may collapse if the glacier retreats as it leaves the mound unsupported.
They can form on the sides of eskers, known as beaded eskers
Outwash planes
Large areas of fluvio-glacial material in front of the snout of the glacier.
They are sorted, larger material nearer the snout and small material (sands, clays, silts) further away.
Stratified (in layers) summer and winter layers are represented (varves)
