Arctic Flashcards
Extremity
Quite extreme
Parts are 20°c warmer than they should be
Ocean temperatures are 4°c warmer than usual
Effects (positive feedback)
Positive feedback loop - less ice so more vegetation, so more suns energy absorbed (albedo) so gets warmer, and so on…
Effects (permafrost)
As it gets warmer, permafrost thaws, methane and co2 are produces, greenhouse gasses, so it gets warmer, and so on…
The release of methane can increase the temp by up to 0.5°c and it is 30x stronger insulator than co2
Effects (sea exposed)
Ice melts so more dark ocean exposed so less suns energy reflected (albedo) so it absorbs heat so it gets hotter
Other effects
Communities like vuntut gwitchin, way of life threatened
Settlements may be threatened
Ecosystems threatened (polar bears fish a lot of the time but need to rest on ice, number of icebergs has decreased.)
Monsoon over Asia could be disturbed tpdutpe to warmer oceans
