Types of Magnetism (1) Flashcards
What and when are magnetic fields produced?
Produced by negatively charged electrons as they move through space.
Magnetic fields occur any time an electrical charge is in motion.
Define Magnetic Moment
The strength of a magnetic field
How does a net Magnetic Moment become zero?
If two electrons around the same nucleus are spinning in opposing directions pair together.
Electrons occur in _____.
Pairs, paired electrons spin in opposite directions (net magnetic field of zero).
Some materials with _____ electrons, have a net magnetic field which react more to external fields.
unpaired electrons.
Three categories of magnetic materials:
- Paramagnetic
- Ferromagnetic
- Diamagnetic
Paramagnetic
Materials have a minimal positive attraction to a magnet.
- when the external magnetic field is removed, the magnetic properties are not retained
Ferromagnetic
Materials have a high attraction to a magnet.
- when the external magnetic field is removed, the magnetic properties are retained
Diamagnetic
Materials have very weak, negative attraction to a magnet.
- Slightly repelled b y magnetic fields
- when the external magnetic field is removed, the magnetic properties are not retained
Examples of Paramagnetic materials
- Platinum
- Aluminium
- Manganese
Examples of Ferromagnetic materials
- Iron
- Nickel
- Cobalt
