Basics (1) Flashcards
1
Q
Advantages of MT
A
- Locates fine, shallow surface cracks
- Defects at surface or slightly subsurface
- Fast and simple
- Very little size and shape limitations
- inexpensive
2
Q
Disadvantages of MT
A
- Test material must be Ferromagnetic
- Orientation and strength of magnetic field is crucial
- High current may be necessary
- Some parts require demagnetization
- Materials can be burned by too high of a current
3
Q
What is Magnetic Particle Testing?
A
NDT method that uses magnetic fields and small magnetic particles to test for surface or slightly subsurface defects.
- particles are attracted to field leakage sites (defects)
4
Q
Magnetic Particle Testing particles can be in a dry powder form or _____________.
A
suspended in oil or water.
5
Q
Why would MT be chosen over LPI?
A
Faster, requires less surface prep and is able to locate slightly subsurface flaws.
