Types Of LTM Flashcards
What did Endel Tulving realise
MSM about LTM was to simplistic and inflexible
What were the three factors of LTM
Episodic, Semantic and procedural
What is episodic memory
Refers to our ability to recall events (episodes) from our lives
What’s the 1st process of episodic memory
1) time stamped - remember when they happened as well as what happened. Also store memory on how events relate to each other over time
What’s the 2nd process of episodic memory
2) memory of single episode will include people place object behaviour
All these memories form to produce one memory
What’s the 3rd process of episodic memory
3) have to make conscious effort to recall episodic memories . Do this quickly but still aware that you are searching for your memory of what happened
What is semantic memory
LTM memory store of our knowledge of the world. These memories usually need to be recalled deliberately
Are semantic memories time stamped
No
What is semantic knowledge
Is less personal more about facts we all share . According to Tulving it is less vulnerable to distortion and forgetting than episodic memory
What is procedural memory
LTM store for our knowledge on how to do things. includes memory’s of learned skills. Usually recall these without effort
