The Working Memory Model Flashcards
What is WMM
A explanation of how STM is organised and how it functions.
What is WMM concerned with
Mental space that is active when we are temporarily storing and manipulating information
E.g playing chess
What does the model consist with
Central executive
Phonological loop
Visio-spatial sketched
Episodic buffer
What is central executive
Has supervisory role. It monitors incoming data, focuses and divides our limitited attention and allocates space system. Has limited processing capacity and does not store limitation
What is phonological loop
Deals with auditory information and preserves order in which information arrives.
What is phonological sub divided to
- Phonological store which stores words you hear
- articulatory process which allows maintenance rehearsal
- the capacity of this loop is believed to be two seconds worth of what you can say
What is the Visuo-spatial sketchpad
Stores visual and/or spatial information when required. Limited capacity which according to Baddley is about three or four objects
What is Visuo spatial sketch pad divided into
Visual cache which stores visual data
Inner scribe, which records the arrangements of objects in the visual field
What is episodic buffer
Temporary store for information integrating the visual spatial and verbal information processed by other stores and maintaining a sense of time sequencing - basically recording events that are happening
What can episodic buffer be seen as for central executive system
Storage component
What is the capacity of EB
Limited capacity of four chunks
What does episodic link
Between working memory and long term
Memory
