Multi Store Model Flashcards
Who created multi store model of memory
Richard Atkinson and Richard Shiffrins
What is the multi store model
Representation on how memory works on three stores called sensory register ,
STM and LTM. Describes how information is transferred from one store to another what makes some memories last and what makes some disappear
What is sensory register
The memory store for each of our five senses vision and hearing
What goes through sensory register
Stimuli from environment
What is iconic store
Vision
What is echoic store
Hearing
What is coding in the iconic sensory register
Visual information
What is coding for echoic sensory register
Acoustic
What is the duration of sensory register
Very brief less than half a second
What is capacity for sensory register
High capacity ( millions of receptors)
What is the key receptor
Attention because information passes further to memory system
What is maintenance rehearsal in memory stores
Repeat material to ourselves over and over again. Can keep memory to STM as long as we rehearse it . If rehearse it long enough can pass into LTM
What is retrieval
According to multi store model in order to recall information from LTM has to be transferred back into STM
What’s the case of HM
HM under went brain surgery to relieve epilepsy . Unfortunately procedure used in its infancy and not fully understood. Crucially his hippocampus was removed and now known to be central memory function
He could not form LTM but performed well on test to measure his STM
