Types of long-term memory Flashcards
What are the three types of LTM
Episodic, Semantic, Procedural
What do Episodic memories consist of
Events/Experiences in our lives
What do Semantic memories consist of
Facts, meanings and knowledge of the world
What do Procedural memories consist of
skilled behaviours
What does declarative mean
Can be put into words
Which types of LTM are declarative
Semantic and Episodic
Which types of LTM are non - declarative
Procedural
Which types of LTM are time stamped
Episodic
Which types of LTM are not time stamped
Semantic and Procedural
Which types of LTM are autobiographical
Episodic
Which types of LTM are not autobiographical
Semantic and Procedural
Which types of LTM are recalled consciously
Episodic and Semantic
Which types of LTM are not recalled consciously
Procedural
What are episodic memories like when it comes to forgetting
Easiest memories to forget
What are semantic memories like when it comes to forgetting
Resistant to forgetting
What are procedural memories like when it comes to forgetting
Very resistant to forgetting
What influences the strength of episodic memories
Level of emotion felt at the time
What influences the strength of semantic memories
How deeply processed the information was
What influences the strength of procedural memories
How many times the skill is practiced
Where are episodic memories located
First coding in the prefrontal cortex, stored across the brain connected by hippocampus
Where are semantic memories located
Parahippocampal cortex
Where are procedural memories located
Motor cortex and Cerebellum
Evaluate the theories of LTM in terms of case study evidence (Strength)
Clinical studies of amnesia (Clive Wearing) showed he had difficulty recalling events that had happened to him in his past. But his semantic memories were relatively unaffected. Procedural memories were also intact. Therefore, supports the view there are different stores in LTM as one store can be damaged but others are unaffected.
Evaluate the theories of LTM in terms of conflicting findings about types of LTM and Brain areas
Buckner and Peterson (1996) reviewed research findings and concluded that semantic memory is located in the left prefrontal cortex and episodic in the right prefrontal cortex. But Tulving found semantic memory was associated with the right prefrontal cortex and the opposite for episodic memories. Challenges evidence to support types of memory as can’t agree on where each type is located
