Resistance to social influence Flashcards
Is social support situational or dispositional
Situational
Is locus of control situational or dispositional
dispositional
Define resistance to social influence
The ability to oppose pressure to conform or obey by maintaining personal autonomy
What % of p’s resisted conforming in Asch’s study
25%
what % of p’s resisted obeying to give 450v shock in Milgram’s study
35%
How does social support help with resistance to conformity
A dissenter breaks the unanimity of the majority
How does social support help with resistance to obedience
A disobedient role model challenges the legitimacy of authority
What are the characteristics of someone with an internal locus of control
They believe they are in control of what happens to them
What are the characteristics of someone with an external locus of control
They believe what happens to them is due to chance or luck
How are internals with resisting social influence
Internals are more able to resist pressure to conform than externals, because they may have more self-confidence and less need for social approval from others
How are externals with resisting social influence
Externals are vulnerable to the opinions and behaviours of others, they may see no point in resisting
Define Social support
Presence of others who defy authority figures or go against the majority opinion.
Give an evaluation of social support in resisting obedience (Strength)
Milgram conducted a variation with two confederate teachers, one stopped at 150v and the other 210v. Obedience rate dropped from 65% to 10%.
Give an evaluation of social support in resisting conformity (Strength)
When unanimity was broken by a dissenter, conformity rate dropped from 32% to 5.5%
Define Rotters (1966) Locus od Control
A personality trait/belief system regarding what people consider to be the causes of their experiences
What do people with internal LOC’s believe
They believe they have personal control over their lives and outcomes of their actions. They tend to attribute success and failure to their own efforts and abilities. More likely to take responsibility.
What do people with external LOC’s believe
They believe external factors, such as fate, luck, or powerful others control their lives. They tend to attribute outcomes to outside forces. They fell less empowered to effect change in their lives or resist social pressures.
Give an evaluation for locus of control (strength/weakness)
Replication of Milgram’s study. P’s assessed on LOC beforehand. 37% internals refused to go to highest shock level and 23% of externals. However, 63% of internals stilled obeyed, suggesting LOC is only a partial explanation.
Give an evaluation for locus of control (weakness)
Relationship to locus of control and resistance to social influence is only correlational. Other factors such as level of social anxiety, sense of personal morality and social status. Individuals with higher social status may feel more empowered to resist.
