Types of Feedback Flashcards
Intrinsic / Internal feedback
A type if continuous feedback that comes from proprioceptors
Extrinsic / External feedback
Feedback that comes from external sources
E.g. from a teacher or a coach
Positive feedback
Reinforce skill learning and give info about a successful outcome
Negative feedback
Info about an unsuccessful outcome, which can be used to build more successful strategies
Knowledge of Results
External feedback gained by seeing results of either their own performance or an another’s
Knowledge of Performance
This is feedback about patterns of movements that has taken, or is taking place
Intrinsic: advantages
> often provide as movement is performed and is, readily available and movements can often be corrected or altered immediately
performer doesn’t have to rely on others, and if the performer is autonomous then feedback is likely to be accurate
Intrinsic: disadvantage
> if the performer is at cognitive stage of learning they might not be able to accurately interpret the info being provided by their body
not every performer will be able to feel and interpret movements effectively due to the sensory effectiveness
some performers might interpret intrinsic info incorrectly and therefore performance may deteriorate
Extrinsic: advantages
> coach can give points that may lead to improvements in performance as long as the info is accurate
Extrinsic: disadvantage
> inaccurate feedback can affect the performance negatively and result in negative transfer
if the source of feedback is unreliable then the performers motivation will drop
doesn’t encourage as much kinaesthetic awareness
Positive: advantages
> can lead to positive reinforcement and enable s-r bonds to be formed
can be extremely motivating, especially for cognitive learners
can help build confidence and self-esteem
Positive: disadvantages
If undeserved the performer might build an inappropriate s-r bonf, and performance might deteriorate
Terminal feedback
Received after the movement has been completed and is extrinsic feedback.
- it can be given immediately by the teacher or some time after the movement has been completed
- feedback given immediately is beneficial because it addresses the situation when it’s fresh in the learners mind
- a delay in feedback, for example, until the next training session, can also be advantageous as it allows the athlete to think about the performance
