What is personality
the patterns of thoughts and feelings and way in which we interact with our environment and other people that make us a unique person
What is trait theory
people are born with established personality characteristics
What is a trait
a single characteristic of personality that is believed to be a natural force or instinct causing an individual to behave in a predicted way
What are genes
biological units or inheritance found in each individual’s cell in the body. A persons gene determines their physical and psychological characteristics
What is aggression
an action intended to bring about harm/injury. Aggressive behaviour is undesirable and dysfunctional in the context of sport
How is trait theory depicted as
behaviour = function of personality
(B = F(P))
What are drawbacks to trait theory
- behaviour adapts in response to particular environmental situations
- other people can shape a persons personality isn’t considered in the theory

What is Eysenck Personality types
He identified 4 primary personality traits/types.
These personality types are arranged on a two-dimensional model
What is an extrovert
a personality characteristic or trait of a person and likes excitement but lacks concentration
What is an Introvert
a personality characteristic or trait or a person who doesn’t seek social situations and likes peace and quiet, but is good at concentrating
What is a Neurotic personality
a personality characteristic of someone who is highly anxious and has unpredictable emotions
What is a stable personality
A personality characteristic if someone who doesn’t swing from one emotion to another p, but is usually constant in their emotional behaviour
What is the Narrow Band Theory
Girndano was another trait theorist, he proposed that there are two distinct personality types.
Type A and Type B
What is a Type A personality
- highly competitive
- works fast
- strong desire to succeed
- likes control
- prone to suffer stress
What is a Type B personality
- non-competitive
- works more slowly
- lacking in desire to succeed
- doesn’t enjoy control
- less prone to stress
