Q

What is a lab experiment ?

A
  • an experiment in a controlled environment
  • not always in a lab (classrooms etc.)
  • helps you control extraneous variables

Q

What are advantages of lab experiments ?

A
  • high control over extraneous variables - more certain over results - higher internal validity
  • experiment can be replicated

Q

What are the disadvantages of lab experiments ?

A
  • lack of generalisability
  • artificial
  • unfamiliar environment
  • can’t be generalised beyond the setting (external validity)
  • play to demand characteristics

Q

What are field experiments ?

A
  • carried out in natural setting (street, school, workplace)

Q

What are the advantages to field experiments ?

A
  • have a higher mundane reaction because the environment is more natural
  • may produce behaviour that is more authentic (high external validity)

Q

What are disadvantages of field experiments ?

A
  • loss of some control with Ev’s
  • harder to identify cause and effect between the IV and the DV
  • difficult to provide an accurate representation

Q

What are the ethical issues with field experiments ?

A
  • problem of informed consent - if you tell what is happening then the advantage of natural setting is lost
  • impossible to offer the right to withdraw and debriefing

Q

What is a natural experiment ?

A
  • uses naturally occurring events for research
  • the IV is natural as is changed even if the research wasn’t happening
  • this can still happen in a lab

Q

What are the advantages of natural experiment ?

A
  • can research topics we couldn’t normally due to ethical issues (Romanian Orphan’s)
  • high external validity because it involves real life issues

Q

What are disadvantages to natural experiment ?

A
  • participants cant be randomly allocated
  • hard to understand which aspect affects the IV

Q

What is a Quasi experiment ?

A
  • happens when you cant carry out experiments
  • have an IV based on a existing difference that occurs between people - the Iv is natural
  • cant randomly allocate participant’s

  • high internal validity
  • can be replicated

16
Q

What is internal validity ?

A
  • research is accurate within the experiment
  • research cant be effected by the experimenter or demand characteristics
17
Q

What is external validity ?

A
  • whether the research results are accurate and can be generalised beyond the experimental setting
