Q

Attachment research into the role of the father

A

At the time of Bowlby’s studies childcare was seen as the mothers responsibility whilst the father was free to carry out his ‘natural’ role as a provider for the family.

More recent research has suggested that the father may a different role. It has been shown that both parents are capable of providing emotion support to a child to ensure a healthy psychological development.

This has led to more flexible working arrangements for the family. It is now becoming more of the norms for the mother to become the highest aner and work longer hours. Many parents now share childcare responsibilities across the week. This means that modern parents are more likely to maximise their income and contribute to the economy

How has the development of mental health drugs affected the economy ?

A
  • An absence from work costs the economy an estimated £15 billion a year.
  • A recent government report has shown that a third of absences are caused by a mild to moderate mental health disorder,
  • Therefore, psychological research into the causes and treatment of mental illnesses has helped supply a healthy work force
  • Patients can now access psychotherapeutic drugs such as SSRI’s and antianxiety drugs
  • This means that in many cases people with mental disorders are able to manage their condition effectively and return to work.
