experimental methods Flashcards
1
Q
What are aims ?
A
- general statement of what you are investigating
- purpouse of study
- often developed from psychological theory
2
Q
What are the 2 types of hypothesis ?
A
- null hypothesis
- alternate hypothesis
3
Q
What is a null hypothesis ?
A
A statement that predicts there will be no effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable
4
Q
What is an alternate hypothesis ?
A
- what you expect to happen
- states the effect of the independent on the dependent variable
5
Q
What is a directional hypothesis ?
A
- one-tailed
- when the findings of previous research suggest the outcome
6
Q
What is a non-directional hypothesis ?
A
- two-tailed
- no previous research
- findings from previous research contradict the hypothesis
7
Q
What are variables ?
A
- anything that can change within an investigation
- they are used to see whether a change in one aspect causes a change in another
8
Q
What is an independent variable ?
A
- things that are manipulated or changed
9
Q
What are dependent variables ?
A
- the variable that is measured
10
Q
What is operationalisation ?
A
- defining variables in how they can be measured
11
Q
What are experimental methods ?
A
- involves the manipulation of an IV to measure the effect on the DV
12
Q
What type of hypothesis are non-directional and directional hypothesis linked to ?
A
Alternate
