Sign test Flashcards
1
Q
What is the basic definition of the sign test ?
A
A statistical test to determine the significance of a sample of related items
2
Q
When do you use the sign test ?
A
- When looking at paired/ related data
- Repeated measures design
- Matched pairs
3
Q
How do you do the sign test before the critical period ?
A
Step 1: Work out if the hypothesis is one-tailed or two-tailed
Step 2: Record on the table if a equals, positive or negative sign is needed
Step 3: Count how many of each there is
Step 4: Find ‘s’ which is the least frequent value out of the positive or negative
Step 5: Find ‘n’ which is the number of participants which had a positive or negative sign
4
Q
What is the critical value table and how do you use it ?
A
- This table stays the same
- First you have to know if your hypothesis is one or two tailed
- always use the 0.05 hypothesis level of significance
- Identify the n value
- identify the critical value n
- S needs to be equal to or less than the critical value to be significant
5
Q
How do you report it ?
A
- if a result is significant, the researcher accept the alternate hypothesis and rejects the null hypothesis
- If the result is not. significant, the researcher accepts the null hypothesis and rejects the alternate hypothesis
