Types Of Experiment Flashcards
what is an experiment
changing one thing to see if it changes another thing
what is an extraneous variable
extra variables which could affect the DV but are not the IV. these need to be identified and controlled during experiments otherwise they could ruin the results
what’s an example of an extraneous variable
gender of a participant, the intelligence of a participant and the temperature of the experimenting room
what is a confounding variable
these are the extra variables that are not controlled so they could confuse results.
define a demand characteristic
EV within the experiment which may give participants “clues” as to what the aim of the experiment is which could result the participants adjusting their behaviour
define an investigator effect
these are clues specifically from the researchers conscious or unconscious actions (for example nodding to a participants question)
define randomisation
if you leave as much as possible down to chance then you reduce the likelihood of having an effect on the results yourself
define standardisation
if you keep as much as possible exactly the same for each participant then you will be able to rid any EV
name the 4 different types of experiments used in psychology
laboratory , field , quasi , natural
what is an experiment a type of
a type of research method
why is this the most frequently used form of research method
lab because they are the research method with the most control
what has a controlled environment and manipulation of IV
lab experiment
what has a natural environment and manipulation of IV
field experiment
what has a controlled environment and pre existing iv
quasi experiment
what has a natural environment and a pre existing IV
natural experiment
