Types Of Exocrine Glands Flashcards
Simple exocrine glands
Include tubular glands
Function: intestinal glands secreting digestive juices are simple glands
Coiled simple glands
Typified by sweat glands and occur in a coiled tube
Simple exocrinr glands (A3)
Single unbranched duct
Location: mucous glands of the tongue, esophagus, and the gastric glands of the stomach
Simple alveolar glands
Occurs in flask-like sacs
Location: are stages in the development of branched simple glands
Branched alveolar glands
Has numerous sacs leading to one major duct. The sebaceous (oil) glands are branched alveolar glands
Tubular compound gland
Has many tubelike branches leading to one major sac
Location: found in the testes of the male and the mucous glands of the mouth
Alveolar compound gland
Has numerous sacs distributed among its branches
The mammary glands are compound alveolar glands which is known as acinar glands
Tubuloalveolar glands
A combination of tubes and saclike structures
Example: salivary glands
Discharged cell
A cell that has died and is being discharged with its contents as the secretion
Developing cells
Will later become filled and discharged
Merocrine gland
Discharges a secretion into a nearby duct
Released through exocytosis
Secretory cell
The secretory is enclosed within the cell part and is emitted from the gland
Location: lines the duct
Cell part
A small mass of cytoplasm that moves toward the duct
Function: Pinches off from a parent cell
Holocrine glands
Destroys the gland cell
Sebaceous glands are holocrine glands
Apocrine glands
Loss of cytoplasm as well as the intended secretion
The mammary glands are apocrine glands
