Muscular system Flashcards
Three basic types muscle
-skeletal
-cardiac
-smooth
Muscles are responsible for
-All movement of the body
-650 muscles in the human body
Info on muscles
-only tissue able to contact
- creates movement by flexing and extending
-body energy converts
Three types of muscles
Cardiac- branched, striated fiber with single nucleus and intercalated discs (together)
Skeletal- multi-nucleated, striated, cylindrical fibers
Smooth- elongated, spindle shaped fiber with single nucleus
Skeletal muscle
-found in limbs
-striated, multi-nucleated
-voluntary
Cardiac muscle
-found in heart
-striated, one nucleus
-involuntary
Smooth muscle
-found in viscera
-not striated, one nucleus
-involuntary
Characteristics of muscle
-skeletal/smooth muscle are elongated
- muscle cell = muscle fiber
-contraction = movement of microfilaments (protein fibers)
-all muscles share some terminology ( myo and mys - refers to muscle) (prefix sacro - refers to flesh)
Shapes of muscle
Triangular- shoulder, neck
Spindle- arms, legs
Flat- diaphragm, forehead
Circular- mouth, anus
Exercise and Muscles
Isotonic- muscle shorten and movement occurs (most normal exercise)
Isometric- tension in muscles increases, no movement occurs (pushing one hand against the other)
How are muscles attached to the bone
-muscles are always attached to at least 2 points
-movement is attained due to a muscle moving an attached bone
Origin
Attachment to a moveable bone
Insertion
Attachment to a immoveable bone
