Dermis Flashcards
Integumentary System
Dermis
Contains many fibers of collagen together with various kinds of cells
Strong and flexible
Sebaceous glands
Oil glands that are generally connected to hair follicles
Their secretion is an oily substance called sebum by holocrine secretion
Oils and lubricates
Sweat glands
Performs excretory functions by delivering metabolic waste products to skin surface for removal and it regulates body temperature
500cc to 12 liters/day (mostly water)
Papillary
Areolar connective tissues; has dermal papillae (lies on top of dermal ridges)
One of the layers of the dermis
Reticular
Reticulum (network) of collagen and reticular fibers
The second layer of the dermis
Fingerprints, palm prints, foot prints
Dermal papillae lie atop dermal ridges
Elevate the overlying epidermis into epidermis ridges
Sweat films
Genetically determined
Flexion creases
Keep dermis from constant folding
Fibers
Collagen, electric fibers (stretch-recoil), striae (stretch marks), and tension lines (lines of cleavage)
Types of sweat glands
(most numerous, true sweat, opens through pores)
Eccrine or Merocrine, apocrine, modified glands
Apocrine
Axillary, anal and genital areas only
Ducts open into hair follicles
Organic molecules in it decompose with time - odor
Ceruminous (modified apocrine gland)
Secrete earwax
Mammary (modified apocrine gland)
Secretes milk
Eccrine or Merocrine
Most numerous
True sweat: 99% water, some salts, traces of waste
Open through pores
