Epidermis Flashcards
Integumentary System
Stratum Corneum
Horny layer, dead cells filled with protein keratin
Protects against heat, pathogenic microorganisms, chemicals, and light
Stratum Lucidum
Clear, flat cells with a pre-keratin substance called eleidin
Found primarily in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet
Stratum Granulosum
layers of flattened cells containing keratinocytes which will produce keratin
Stratum Spinosum
Spinyness is artifactual
Tonofilaments (bundles of protein) resist tension
Where keratin is produced through many of these cells
Stratum Basale or Stratum Germinativum
Single layer of cuboidal and columnar cells that undergo mitosis and become cells of the superficial layers
Attached to dermis; youngest cells
