Types of Data Flashcards
What are the Strengths/Weaknesses of Secondary data?
Strengths:
- Inexpensive, easily acquired, minimal effort.
Weaknesses:
- May be substantial variation in the quality of secondary data, info may be outdated or incomplete. May not quite match the researchers needs. May challenge validity of conclusions from said experiments
What is Secondary Data?
- Collected by someone other than the person doing the research, already exists before research begins
What are the strengths/weaknesses of Quantitative Data?
Strengths:
- Simple to analyse, comparisons easily drawn, less objective and open to bias
Weaknesses:
- Narrower in meaning and detail, may fail to represent ‘real life’
What is meant by Quantitative Data?
- Expresses Numerically
What are the Strengths/Limitations of Qualitative Data?
Strengths:
- Offers richness in detail, gives pps opportunity to govern thoughts feeling and opinions
- Greater external validity, insight into pps worldview
Weaknesses:
- Difficult to analyse, patterns and comparisons may be hard to identify
- So, conclusions often rely on subjective interpretations of the researcher and these may be subject to bias, particularly is researcher has preconceptions on what they are expecting to find
What is Qualitative Data?
- Expresses in words, non-numerical
What are the Strengths/weaknesses of Primary Data?
Strengths:
- Fits the job, authentic obtained from pps themselves for the purpose of said investigation, can be designed in a way that they specifically target the information that the researcher requires.
Weaknesses:
- Requires time and effort and can be expensive, whereas secondary can be obtained in a matter of minutes
What is Primary Data?
- Fist-hand from pps, collected specifically for the purpose of research
What is a meta-analysis
- A number of research studies that have investigated the same area are reviewed
What is the Effect Size?
- Overall statistical measure of relationship across variables in a meta-analysis
