what is compliance?
A superficial temporary type of conformity where an individual outwardly goes along with the group but privately disagrees. The change in behavior only lasts as long as the group pressure is present.
what is identification?
A moderate type of conformity where an individual changes their beliefs and behavior both publically and privately because they value being part of the group.
what is internalisation?
A deep type of conformity where the individual genuinely accepts the group norms. This leads to a permanent change in behavior, even when the group is not present.
what is conformity?
A change in a person’s behavior or opinions as a result of real or imagined pressure from a person or group of people
what are the differences between types of conformity?
Each type of conformity differs in terms of depth of conformity and whether private beliefs are changed.
what is an example of compliance?
Laughing at a joke even though you don’t find it funny because your friends are.
what is an example of identification?
Being vegetarian in university because your friends are and then after university you eat meat
what is an example of internalisation?
being exposed to lots of vegan campaigns and so you accept into your own cognition’s that eating meat is wrong and so you too become a vegan.
