Types of chemical reactions Flashcards
Combustion:
When a fuel burns in the presence of oxygen.
Thermal decomposition
When a compound breaks down forming two or more products.
Oxidation
When a substance gains oxygen
(zinc- zinc oxide).
Substance + oxygen → Substance oxide.
Exothermic reactions
REALEASE energy into the atmosphere (normally in the form of heat).
Endothermic reactions
A chemical reaction that ABSORBS energy from its surroundings.
Conservation of mass:
This is a rule which tells us that during a chemical reaction no atoms are destroyed or created. This means that the reactants and products are going to have the same mass.
Change of state:
The process of turning from a solid, liquid, or gas into another one of those states
A chemical reaction is..
The process in which one or more substances, the reactants, are converted to one or more different substances, the products.
