THE PERIODIC TABLE Flashcards
What is an Element?
Any material or substance made up of only one type of particle (atom).
What is a Molecule?
Its when more than one atoms are joined together.
What is a Compound?
Its when 2 or more elements react in a chemical reaction and they become chemmically combined.
What is a Mixture?
Mixtures are when 2 or more elements ar together but not chemically combined.
Proberties of metals..
● high melting and boiling points
● solids at room temperature
● shiny (when polished)
● good conductors of heat and electricity.
● malleable (can be bent and shaped)
● ductile (can be stretched into wires)
● sonorous (make a ringing noise when hit)
Properties of non-metals..
● low melting point and boiling points
● many are gases at room temperature
● brittle (when solid)
● dull (not shiny)
● poor conductors of heat and electricity
Describe how the Periodic table is organised.
Elements in the periodic table are arranged in order of increasing atomic number. Elements with the same number of electron shells are arranged in the horizontal rows (periods), and elements with similar properties are arranged in vertical columns (groups). Metals are on the left and Non-metals on the right.
What is a composite material?
Composite materials are made up of different materials which are combined to improve their
properties.
Properties of composite materials.
An ideal composite material should have high strength, light weight and thermal stability.
Uses of composite materials.
Composite materials are generally used for buildings, bridges, and structures
