Light and sound waves Flashcards
What is the crest?
The highest point from the resting point.
What is the trough?
The lowest point from the resting point.
What is the wavelength?
The distance from trough to trough or crest to crest.
What is the frequency?
The amount of waves per second (measured in Hertz)
What is the relationship between frequency and pitch?
The higher the frequency the higher the pitch.
What is the relationship between volume of a sound and the amplitude?
The larger the amplitude the louder the sound.
Reflection- In SOUND
When the sound echos.
Absorption- In SOUND
When the sound wave hits a surface then the vibration slowly begins to petter out until you cant hear it.
What is sound?
Sound is a vibration that travels in mediums (air, water). Sound can only travel when there are particles in the space and not in a vacuum.
What type of waves are Light waves?
Transverse waves.
What type of waves are Sound waves?
Longtitudal waves.
What is the human auditory range?
64-23,000 decibels.
Diffrences between sound and light waves.
-Light waves can travel through vacuums while sound cannot.
-Light travels in transverse waves while sound travels in longtitudal waves.
-Light waves travel a lot quicker that sound waves.
Absorbtion-In LIGHT
When opaque objects take in the energy of the light waves.
Diffusion- In LIGHT
This is when reflection happens but instead of producing an image the light rays are scattered.
