Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the word equasion for photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + Water –> Glucose + Oxygen
What are the factors that affect the rate of photosynthesis?
Light, Water, Carbon Dioxide and Light Intensity.
What is the test for starch?
Put the leaf in boiling hot water to destroy cells so that the starch comes out. Add iodine to the leaf, if there is starch present the leaf will turn a blue-black colour. If it is orange-yellow there is no starch present.
Which part of a plant cell absorbs light energy?
The Chloroplasts
Explain how leaves are adapted for photosynthesis
- Veins which carry water and glucose.
- They are wide which means they can collect more sunlight.
-They are thin which means the diffusion of gasses is faster. - They are green which means they contain chlorophyl.
Differentiate between a normal and variegated leaf.
A variegated leaf has white areas which means that its missing chlorophyl.
Waxy cutlicle
Reduces the water loss and evapouration as it is made from an impermeable material.
Epidermis
Its transparent so that sunlight can reach the paliside layer. And its used as protection against drought and ultraviolet light.
Paliside layer
Where photosynthesis happens.
Spongy layer
Has air gaps with CO2 and O2.
Vein
Carries water and glucose.
Stoma
A whole in the Epidermis that allows gas diffusion.
Root hair cell
Collects water and nutrients from the soil.
Funtion of the Xylem vessel.
-Hollow dead tubes (made of dead cells).
-Water and minerals are transported upwards.
-Made of lignin.
-Very thick and strong walls to help support the plant.
Function of the Phloem vessel.
-Transports sugar (Glucose).
-Made of living cells.
-The end walls of the tube cells
have pores through which food
is transported through, in the form of dissolved sugars.
