Muscles and Bones Flashcards
Explain why it is important to have a skeleton.
5 FUNCTIONS:
-They protect our organs
-They support our body structure.
-It gives shape to the organism.
-They allow movement due to the joints.
-They produce red blood celsl.
Ligaments:
They connect bone to bone. Ligaments are elsastic and stretchy to allow the joints to move when they need to, but meanwhile to keep them aligned.
Tendons:
They connect muscles to bones. Tendons are not stretchy. This allows the muscles to pull up on a bone.
Cartlidge:
Its a strong, spongy tissue that protects the end of our bone when we move.
Synovial fluid:
Fills the space between the ends of bones in a joint and makes movement very smooth and free of friction. Synovial fluid also acts like a shock absorber which is very useful when we excersize.
What is an antagonistic pair?
Muscles can only pull and can’t push. This means two muscles have to work together at a joint. This is called an Antagonistic pair.
Virtibrates:
Have a backbone
Ivirtibrates:
Have no backbone
Endoskeleton:
A hard frame that supports the body of a vertebrate animal on the inside, made of bone or cartilage
Exoskeleton
An exoskeleton is a hard covering that supports and protects the bodies of some types of animals “outside skeleton.” Most Ivertibrates have exoskeletons (ex.. Insects).
Ball and socket joint
Allow the joint to rotate in 360º allowing a lot of flexibilty.
Hinge joint
Works like a lever and allows movement of 180º.
Pivot joint
Allow bones to rotate around each other by 360º. (neck)
Fixed joint
This joint allows no movement.
The role of a joint:
Joints connect the ends of the bones and help them move.
