Types of chemical reactions Flashcards
Phosphorylation
reactions where phosphate groups are being moved around
- production of ATP
- energy released when phosphate group is removed
- ex: ATP —> ADP + PO4 releases energy
Anabolic
build larger molecules
- endothermic
Catabolic
break things into smaller parts
- exothermic
Dehydration Synthesis
losing water to combine monomers
Hydrolysis
creating water by breaking polymer linkage
neutralization
acid + base = water + salt
- stomach acids and bile
- carbonic acid in blood
buffers
molecules/rxns that minimize changes inside cells
- absorb excess H+ or OH-
Red-Ox
movement of electrons
why is oxygen usually involved in red-ox rxn
high electronegativity attracts H atom and reduces other molecule???
Substrate level phosphorlylation
enzymes directly move phosphate group from a donating molecule onto ADP
- seen in glycolysis
Oxidative phosphorlylation
making ATP through a bunch of redox reactions
- seen in ETC
Photophosphorylation
similar to OXPHOS but solar energy provides energy to move electrons
- only in plants
- seen in LIGHT SCHEME
