Biochem: Functional Groups Flashcards
1
Q
Hydroxyl (-OH)
A
- increases solubility –> polar
- alcohols, ends with “-ol”
2
Q
Amino Group (-NH2)
A
- amines
- acts as base
- takes H+ from h2o
3
Q
Carboxyl Group (-COOH)
A
- oxygen double bonds to the main carbon
- carboxylic acids
- acts as acid
4
Q
Carbonyl Group (c=o)
A
- polar
- type of carbs
5
Q
Aldehyde
A
- carbonyl at end of carbon chain
- ends in “-al” or “-hydes”
6
Q
Ketone
A
- carbonyl bound to 2 other carbons/functional groups
- ends in “-one”
7
Q
Sulfhydryl Group (-SH)
A
- thiols
- help stabilize protein structure
8
Q
Phosphate Group (-PO4)
A
- super polar, more than water
- transfers energy b/w organic molecules
- has 2 hydroxyls, a double bond to oxygen, and another oxygen
- two hydroxyls (anions) make it more negative
9
Q
Methyl (-CH3)
A
- non polar, but attached may be polar
- methylated
- adding methyl to dna turns on/off genes or changes functions of hormones
10
Q
Ether (-COC)
A
- result of chemical rxn between 2 carboxyl groups
- slightly polar, but not polar enough to form h-bonds with other ethers
11
Q
Ester (-COO)
A
- consists of carboxyl group bound to two other carbon chains
- carboxyl + hydroxyl = ester
- polar
