Types And Sizes Of Enclosures Flashcards
What are some different types of electrical enclosures?
- Plastic enclosures.
- Junction boxes.
- Stainless steel enclosures.
- Galvanised adaptable boxes.
- Dust tight enclosures.
- Water tight enclosures.
What will effect what containment type you should use?
- If they need to have an IP rating.
- What cable is being used.
- Where the enclosure is.
Where is PVC conduit usually used?
Used mostly in commercial but can still be used in industrial.
What level mechanical protection does PVC conduit have?
Not much mechanical protection.
How do you bend PVC conduit?
By warming up the conduit to room temperature, inserting a bending spring and bending the conduit.
Can PVC conduit be used as the CPC?
No because it is not conductive.
What type of cable do you put in PVC conduit?
Single cables.
Can you use PVC conduit by animals (on farms)?
Yes but a heavy duty version must be used for more mechanical protection.
What are some advantages of PVC conduit?
- light in weight.
- easy to saw / cut.
- simple to form and bend.
- minimal condensation.
- faster to install.
- good electrical and fire resistance.
What are some disadvantages of PVC conduit?
- Care must be taken when gluing joints, not too much or too little.
- PVC expands 5 times faster than steel so you need an expansion coupler.
What is an expansion coupler used for?
To connect PVC conduit and allow for expansion when it heats up.
What are the different types of PVC conduit?
- Heavy gauge super high impact.
- Light gauge super high impact.
- Heavy gauge standard impact.
- Heavy gauge high temperature material.
What sizes does PVC conduit typically come in?
16, 20, 25, 32, 38 and 50mm in diameter.
What are the features of Heavy gauge super high impact PVC conduit?
Designed to withstand severe weather conditions and harsh site conditions.
Where is Light gauge super high impact PVC conduit used?
Suitable for pre cast and in situ concrete work.
Where is Heavy gauge standard impact PVC conduit used?
Suitable for typical conduit installations.
Where is Heavy gauge high temperature material PVC conduit used?
Suitable for installations where 80oC is expected.
Where is metal conduit typically usually used?
Commercial installations.
Does metal conduit have much mechanical protection?
Yes. Metal conduit has a high mechanical protection.
How is metal conduit bent?
Using a conduit bender.
Can metal conduit be used as the CPC
Yes because it’s conductive.
What do you wire metal conduit with?
PVC single cables.
What is a galvanised finish on metal conduit / trunking used for?
To protect against rust.
What is a black enamal finish on metal conduit / trunking used for?
General use in dry conditions.
