Types And Functions of bones & skeletons Flashcards
Name the five types of bones
Long, short, flat, irregular, and sesamoid
Example of long bones
Arms (humerus) and legs (femur)
Example of short bones
Wrist (carpals) and ankles (metacarpals)
Example of flat bones
Bones of the skull (parietal)
Example of irregular bones
Vertebrae’s
Example of sesamoid bones
A bone that is wrapped in tendon (patella- kneecap)
Name the Main functions of bones
Structural support, protection, growth centre for cells, reservoir for minerals, and movement
Main functions- structural support
Support soft tissue, including muscles and internal organs
Main functions- protection
Protective cage for more delicate parts of body (skull protects the brain, rob cage protects lungs)
Main functions - Growth centre for cells
Red blood cells and platelets are made in bones (oxygen transport)
Main functions- reservoir of minerals
A reservoir that the body can call upon in order to regulate calcium and phosphorus levels in body
Main functions- movement
Muscles attach bones by tendons. Muscles contract and move bones to facilitate movement
Axial skeleton
Central core (head, spine, ribs, sacrum)= 80 bones The core muscles help provide support and stabilize axial skeleton for better posture
Appendicular skeleton
attaches to core (Ilium, hips, arms, legs, feet, hands) = 126 bones
6 parts of appendicular skeleton
Arms and forearms, pectoral girdle, hands, pelvis, thighs and legs, and feet and ankles
