Classification Of Joints Flashcards
How are joint classified?
According to their structure or their function
3 types of Structural classification
Fibrous- immovable (skull)
Cartilaginous- semi moveable (spine)
Synovial- freely moveable
Examples of synovial joints
Hips, knees and shoulder
Ligament
Bone to bone
Tendon
Muscle to bone
Types of joints
Hinge, saddle, pivot, ball and socket, plane joint, ellipsoid joint
Hinge joint
1 axis of rotation, eg. Elbow
Saddle joint
2 axis of rotation, eg. Metacarpal and carpal joint
Pivot joint
1 axis of rotation, eg. Head and neck
Ball and socket joint
3 axis of rotation, eg. Shoulder
Plane joint
Slide form side to side, front to back or left to right, eg. Clavicle or tarsals
Ellipsoid joint
Allows for easy movement, side to side or front to back, eg. Between metacarpals and carpals
Why is a shoulder joint more mobile than a hip joint
A shoulder joint is shallower than a hip joint which is very deep
