Type 2 Hypersensitivity Flashcards
Type 2 Hypersensitivity
Antibody Mediated cytotoxicity
* Mediated by antibodies that recognise antigens on a cell surface or space between cells
* Activates classical complement pathway
Which antibody is involved in Type 2?
IgG
How is type 2 different to type 1
Involves type IgG not IgE
Antibodies are circulating in blood, not bound to mast cells
Intrinsic antigens
Part of cell membrane
Extrinsic antigens
Introduced from outside
What does classical complement cascade cause?
Destruction/dysfunction of cells by phagocytosis or cell lysis
Intrinsic vs extrinsic
Antibodies attacking an extrinsic pathogen is okay (e.g. drug reaction)
Antibodies attacking an intrinsic pathogen is not okay (e.g. hormone receptors)
Intrinsic Antigen groups
○ Protein antigens on cell membranes
Can lead to autoimmune anaemia
○ Antigens in matrix between cells
○ Receptor antigens or cells
Mainly hormone receptors
Myasthenia Gravis
Neuromuscular disorder
Attack of intrinsic antigens (ACh)
Results in skeletal muscle weakness
