What is the first line treatment for type 2 diabetes
Metformin
What is the MOA
Works by increasing peripheral utilization of glucose
Does it cause hypoglycaemia?
No
How should dose be increased?
Slowly to prevent side effects (OD-BD-TDS)
If normal treatment is not tolerated, what should be done?
Offer MR
What can metformin also treat?
Polycystic ovary syndrome
Should it be taken with food?
Yes, with or after food
Can it be used in pregnancy?
Yes
Does it cause weight loss or weight gain
Weight loss
What are some side effects of it?
GI side effects
Abdominal pain
Appetite decreased
Taste altered
Lactic acidosis
VIT B12 deficiency
Nausea
What egfr should it be stopped in
Below 30 because renal failure increases risks of lactic acidosis
Signs of lactic acidosis
-Dyspnoea (difficult/laboured breathing)
- Muscle cramps
- Abdominal pain
-Hypothermia
- Asthenia (weakness/lack of energy)
