How does tympanosclerosis present?
hard white plaque on TM
What is this due to?
frequent infections causing hemorrhage in layer of TM
What is the clinical manifestation of tympanosclerosis?
asymptomatic, conductive hearing loss
What is the treatment for tympanosclerosis?
none, exploratory tympanotomy or tympanoplasty
What is otosclerosis?
abnormal ossicular chain bone formation (stapes) = stapes fixed to margin of oval window
What does otosclerosis cause?
progressive conductive hearing loss
What is otosclerosis etiology/epidemiology?
genetics, women, caucasians, third decade
How do you dx otosclerosis?
carhart notch on audiogram, progressive bilateral conductive HL, exaccerbated by preg and estrogen therapy
What is the treatment for otosclerosis?
surgerical - total, partial stapedectomy, stapedotomy
