What is otalgia?
earache
What is the innervation of the ear?
trigeminal, facial, glossopharygneal, vagal, upper cervical nerves
What do you think if there is chronic pain >2-3 mo?
tumor, esp in older adults
What are otologic sources of otalgia?
middle ear infection, external ear infection, foreign body, trauma, mastoiditis
What are malignant sources of otalgia?
nasopharynx, pharynx, tonsil, tongue or larynx
due to tobacco and ETOH
unilateral or remitting middle ear infusion
What are infection causes of otalgia?
tonsillopharyngitis, peritonsiliar, oropharyngeal abscess
Pain with swallowing
Pharyngeal erythema
What are neurologic otalgia?
neuralgia, severe shape or stabbing pain, PE varies
How do you treat neurologic otalgia?
carbamazepine 100-300 mg PO q 8 hr
What is post surgical otalgia?
post tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy
What is the last thing that can cause otalgia?
TMJ disorder, clicking, bruzism, refer to dentist
