What is the tube?
connects middle ear to nasopharynx
What does it provide?
ventilation and drainage of middle ear
When it the tube open?
when yawn and swallow
What are ETD related to?
sinus sources - URI, allergies
Why do kids get ear infections?
adenoids block tube, slope of tube - more horizontal
What are the symptoms of ET obstruction?
gurgling, crackling, poppin, sensation of fullness, pressure, pluggin, w or w/o nasal congestion, unilateral conductive hearin loss, decrease TM mobility
What do you see on PE for ETD?
retracted TM, poor mobility, sometimes effusion, tympanometry type C or B
How do you treat ETD?
decongestants - pseudoephrine 60 mg PO q 8 hr
Intranasal decongestant - afrin (can get dependent) - max 5 days
Allergy -antihistamine (allegra, claritin)
Expectorant - mucinex
What should pt w/ ETD avoid?
air travel, change in altitiude, diving
When do you consider a myringotomy with insertion of PE tubes for ETD?
if not approved after 6 wks
What is the most common surgical procedure in US?
PE or tympanostomy tubes
