Tumour Pathology 1 Flashcards
What is a tumour (neoplasm)?
Abnormal growing mass of tissues (uncontrolled), the growth of which is uncoordinated with surrounding normal tissue (tight regulation)
Affect on tumour if stimulus that caused it is removed?
No effect - tumour is autonomous
Is tumour growth reversible or irreversible?
Irreversible
What are the two types of tumours?
Benign and malignant
Three most common cancers in males
- Prostate
- Lung
- Colon
Difference between benign and malignant tumours?
Malignant tumours are able to invade into adjacent tissue and metastasise (spread) and colonise
Three most common cancers in women
- Breast
- Lung
- Colon
How are tumours classified?
- Based on tissue of origin (epithelium, connective, blood, germ cells etc)
- Benign or malignant
Nomeclature of glandular epithelium
- Benign: adenoma
- Malignant: adenocarcinoma
Nomeclature of squamous epithelium
- Benign: squamous papilloma
- Malignant: squamous carcinoma
Nomeclature of bone (conceive tissue)
- Benign: osteoma
- Malignant: osteosarcoma
Nomeclature of fat (connective tissue)
- Benign: Lipoma
- Malignant: Liposarcoma
Nomeclature of fibrous (connective tissue)
- Benign: fibroma
- Malignant: fibrosarcoma
Nomeclature of white blood cells
-Malignant: leukaemia
No benign tumour
Nomeclature of lymphoid tissue
-Malignant: lymphoma
No benign tumour
