Tumor Viruses Flashcards
What are oncogenes?
Cellular genes activated in tumor cells and/or growth factor and growth factor receptors.
Is a tumor a genetic disease?
Sometimes
What are proto-oncogenes?
Normal genes that become oncogenic due to increased expression and/or mutations
What are viral oncogenes?
Viral genes that act as tumor inducers
What is phase of the cell cycle is a cell in when the chromosome is being duplicated?
a. G1 phase
b. G0 phase
c. S phase
d. M phase
C.
What is the cycling needed to trigger the transition from G1 to S phase?
a. Cyclin D
b. Cyclin E
c. Cyclin A
d. Cyclin B
A.
A litte of B.
What subfamilies of herpesviruses are possibly associated with tumors?
Gammaherpesviruses
What is transformation?
Normal cell phentoype that is changes to an abnormal, oncogenic phenotypes due to something happening the genome or gene expression from stimuli. These cells divide uncontrollably
How do the RNA tumor viruses transform cells?
Onc + or Onc - encode for growth factors, growth factor receptors, signal transduction proteins, and/or transcription factors
How do DNA tumor viruses transform cells?
By interfering with tumor suppressors like pRB and p53. Can also interfere with transcription factors.
What proteins do oncogenes encode?
- Growth factors
- Growth factor receptors
- Signal transduction proteins
- Transcription factors
What is retinoblastoma protein?
a. Viral protein
b. Cytokine
c. Kinase
d. Cell cycle regulator
e. Tumor suppressor protein
D. and E.
What is p53?
A tumore suppressor protein
