How can you test for active TB?
CXR, sputum smear, sputum culture, nucleic acid amplification test
What might you see on a CXR?
Fibronuclear/linear opacities in upper lobe (consolidation)
What are differential diagnoses?
Covid 19, pneumonia
What antibiotics can be used?
RIPE Rifampicin Isoniazid Pyranzimide Ethambutol
Is TB a notifiable disease?
Yes
What are some complications of TB?
Transmission, immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome, ARDS
What are risk factors for TB?
Poverty, poor hygiene, immunosuppression, smokers, foreign travel
What is a side effect of rifampicin?
Red/orange discolouration of secretions
What is a side effect of isoniazid?
Peripheral neuropathy
What is a side effect of pyranzimide?
High uric acid levels
What is a side effect of ethambutol?
Colour blindness and reduced visual acuity
