What is cystic fibrosis?
A mutation in the CFTR gene leading to a defect in chloride secretion and sodium absorption across airway epithelium
How does CF present?
Failure to thrive, meconium ileus, cough, wheeze, recurrent infections, bronchiectasis, pneumothorax
What investigations would you do?
Sweat test, genetics, faecal elastase
How do you manage CF?
Regular chest physio, management of associated problems, antibiotics, mucolytics, pancreatic enzyme supplementation
What are problems associated with CF?
Male infertility, DM, arthritis, cirrhosis
What does Na/Cl channel dysfunction result in?
Thick mucus plugs
What infection is most likely in CF?
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
How does exocrine pancreatic insufficiency present?
Malabsorption, steatorrhoea
