Tsunami Flashcards
What is a tsunami?
It is a series of sea waves generated by under-the-sea earthquakes
How are tsunamis generated?
Plates collide with one another, and one goes down another. When this happens, one of the plates gets stuck, and the overriding plate is distorted. This stuck area ruptures, causing earthquakes and pushing up the ocean floor and sea water with it, causing waves .
What do you see when a tsunami is incoming?
Receding water level/ unusual sea level change
What do you feel when a tsunami is incoming?
earthquake
What should be done during tsunamis/ safety precautions against tsunamis?
Move to higher ground and never go back to the beach to look for the waves. If the waves are visible, you are too close to escape it.
What do you hear when a tsunami is incoming?
rumbling sound of approaching waves
What are storm surges? why does it get mistaken with a tsunami?
they are wind generated waves that occur on the sea
What are the two kinds of tsunamis?
local tsunami and far field/distance tsunami
What is a local tsunami?
it is confined to a coast within a hundred kilometers of its source
what is a distant tsunami?
can travel 1 - 24 hours before reaching the coasts of nearby countries
